Trump can’t believe it. This latest report has unexpectedly hit his desk.

And crucial immigration news just blindsided Donald Trump out of nowhere.

Voters Applaud Trump’s Border Security Efforts Amid Mixed Immigration Views

A striking shift in public sentiment reveals that half of U.S. voters now view border security as stronger than it was two years ago, marking a dramatic 39-point improvement since the question was last posed. This surge in optimism coincides with high approval ratings for President Donald Trump’s approach to border security and immigration, even as his overall performance garners mixed reactions.

A solid 55% of voters approve of Trump’s handling of border security, with only 40% expressing disapproval, making it the only policy area where he enjoys a net positive rating. Support spans party lines: an overwhelming 90% of Republicans, 44% of independents, and even 24% of Democrats back his efforts.

Trump also earns a record-high 47% approval on immigration policy (with 48% disapproving) and 45% for his deportation initiatives (49% disapprove). However, his ratings dip in other areas, including guns (41% approve), foreign policy (40%), taxes (38%), the economy (38%), tariffs (33%), and inflation (33%).

The perception of improved border security is stark: 50% of voters say the situation is better today compared to 22% who feel it’s worse—a complete reversal from May 2023, when 51% said conditions had deteriorated. Republicans (+79 points) and independents (+30) are driving this shift, while Democrats remain divided, with 23% seeing improvement and 36% noting decline.

Yet, while border security wins praise, voters are less enthusiastic about the treatment of illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers. A plurality—44%—believes the Trump administration is too harsh on illegal immigrants, and 46% say the same about those legally seeking asylum.

Only 20% and 15%, respectively, feel the administration isn’t tough enough, with about a third seeing a balanced approach. Democrats (75%) and roughly half of independents view the policies as overly strict, while most Republicans consider them appropriate.

“These data reinforce the notion that border security and immigration are separable issues,” said Republican pollster Daron Shaw. Shaw helps facilitate the Fox News Poll alongside Chris Anderson, a Democrat.

“When it comes to securing the southern border, Trump’s policies are very popular. But the public response to how the administration is handling 11 million undocumented immigrants is mixed, and many are strongly opposed. If he’s to succeed politically on this front, he’ll need to message carefully.”

Voters also support the judiciary’s role in checking Trump’s policies. A clear 58% see federal district court judges challenging his deportation orders as legitimately exercising their authority within the system of checks and balances, compared to 33% who view these actions as unlawful interference.

Democrats and independents largely back the judges, while most Republicans see their rulings as overreach.

“While Trump may feel he is on favorable ground when he is arguing about deportation and immigration with Democrats, there are obvious risks to pushing it too far,” Anderson notes.

“One is he is seen as doing it at the expense of the economic issues, which concern voters more than immigration. Another is ignoring the courts and losing supporters who see value in checks and balances on power.”

Immigration ranks mid-tier among voter concerns, with 66% expressing significant worry, trailing behind inflation (82%), political divisions (78%), healthcare (76%), government spending (73%), and recession fears (72%).

Other issues, like Iran’s nuclear ambitions (66%), the U.S.-China trade war (66%), Russia’s invasion of Ukraine (61%), and the stock market (58%), round out the list.

Republicans prioritize immigration, government spending, and inflation; Democrats focus on inflation, recession risks, and healthcare; and independents highlight inflation, recession, and political divisions.

As Trump navigates this complex landscape, his border security successes stand out, but the path forward demands careful attention to public sentiment and institutional boundaries.
