California’s Governor Gavin Newsom is at it again, launching a shameless attack on Vice President JD Vance ahead of his visit to Camp Pendleton this Saturday. The Democrat leader is spinning wild tales to tarnish what should be a proud moment for the nation’s warriors, falsely insisting that a routine amphibious capabilities demo will grind the I-5 highway to a halt and that U.S. troops will be left high and dry without paychecks.
This whole fiasco stems from Vance’s planned appearance at the base, where he’ll join Marines in showcasing their skills on land, air, and sea. It’s all leading up to a big bash on Del Mar Beach to kick off celebrations for the Marine Corps’ 250th birthday coming up on November 10th—a milestone that honors the bravery and sacrifice of those who defend American freedom.
But Newsom couldn’t resist turning this patriotic event into a political circus. He latched onto a sketchy, anonymously-sourced hit piece from the ultra-left rag MeidasTouch, which hyped up nonsense about the White House slamming shut parts of the I-5 for what they called Vance’s “Marine Corps spectacle.” They even tied it to some “No Kings Protests” and warned of total chaos during the government shutdown forced by Democrats.
Not one to miss a chance for grandstanding, Newsom’s press office jumped on the bandwagon, blasting out the article on X right after MeidasTouch posted it. They labeled the event “an absurd show of force” and doubled down on the lie that U.S. troops wouldn’t see a dime during the shutdown engineered by their own party.
Reality check: President Trump didn’t waste a second. He directed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to ensure every single service member gets paid, shutdown or no shutdown. The White House Office of Management and Budget backed that up on Tuesday, confirming that troops and federal law enforcement would keep receiving their hard-earned wages without interruption.
Undeterred by facts, Newsom himself piled on, amplifying the bogus I-5 closure claim that the Marines themselves later shot down. He took to social media to rant about it, trying to paint Trump and Vance as out of touch.
“Donald Trump and JD Vance think that shutting down the I-5 to shoot out missiles from ships is how you respect the military,” Newsom said.

They went further, stressing that everything stays on base: “All training events will occur on approved training ranges and comport with established safety protocols. No public highways or transportation routes will be closed.”

Vance’s team wasn’t about to let this slide. His press secretary, Taylor Van Kirk, fired back in a statement to Breitbart News, calling out Newsom’s dirty tricks.
