Schumer and the Left despise the former president. They can’t bear another four years of him in the White House.
And now Chuck Schumer is involved in a plot to destroy Donald Trump’s reelection bid for good.
Democrats are furious with the United States Supreme Court.
They believe that the nation’s high court has a political bias towards former President Donald Trump based on the justices handing down a recent ruling that states that presidents have immunity for official acts made while in office.
That bias for the former president doesn’t exist, no matter how much the Left wants you to believe that it does.
Yet, Democrats are still focused on fighting back on this ruling, which they hope will ultimately hurt Trump’s chances of winning a second term as president.
Schumer Fights Back Against the Supreme Court
In a bold legislative move, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) introduced a bill on Thursday designed to counteract a recent Supreme Court ruling that granted former President Donald Trump a measure of presidential immunity.
The legislation, titled the “No Kings Act,” aims to ensure that no current or former president or vice president can claim immunity from criminal prosecution unless explicitly provided by Congress.
This proposal comes in response to a Supreme Court decision last month, where the court acknowledged Trump’s claim of presidential immunity in the context of official acts, but not for unofficial conduct.
The ruling sent the case back to a lower court for further examination.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over the case in Washington, D.C., previously rejected Trump’s immunity claim, stating that his tenure as president did not grant him “the divine right of kings to evade the criminal accountability that governs his fellow citizens.”
Schumer’s legislation also seeks to limit the Supreme Court’s appellate jurisdiction over challenges to the new law, and it allows the federal government to bring cases in either the relevant district court or the court in Washington, D.C.
According to Schumer, this approach “would be the fastest and most efficient method to correcting the grave precedent the Trump ruling presented. With this glaring and partisan overreach, Congress has an obligation – and a constitutional authority – to act as a check and balance to the judicial branch.”
As of Thursday, the bill has garnered support from 34 co-sponsors, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), a former co-chairman of President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign.
Despite this backing, the legislation faces significant challenges in Congress, particularly with the Republican-controlled House, which has often aligned with Trump.
While Democrats hold a slim majority in the Senate, the balance of power could shift following the upcoming election.
In a related development, President Biden proposed a series of reforms to the Supreme Court, advocating for term limits, an enforceable ethics code, and a constitutional amendment to address presidential immunity.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) dismissed the proposal as “dead on arrival” in the House.
Trump has started to leverage the Supreme Court’s ruling in his defense against multiple prosecutions.
After being convicted in a New York case related to hush money payments in May, a judge agreed to delay sentencing until September, allowing Trump to appeal the verdict, citing the immunity decision.
